German Bank Account
We recommend opening a German bank account during your stay here in Germany. In Germany, payments (e.g. of monthly rents for accomodation) are often processed through the so called 'Lastschriftverfahren' (direct debit). That means that you authorize the payee (e.g. your landlord) to directly debit your account for a fixed amount or for recurring payments.
Please get in touch with a German bank to find out which documents are needed for opening an account. Usually, you will be asked to produce these documents:
- Valid ID or passport
- Confirmation of residents' registration
- UCCard or confirmation of enrolment (from KLIPS 2.0) or letter of admission from the University of Cologne
